Do you have a saint you can relate to?
On today's feast of St. Martha, I share some experiences with her.
I was about 15 years old when I saw a folded paper with a Novena to St. Martha on a pew inside the church. There was no one else in the church, or so I recall. While I was reading it, a lady came to my pew and said, "That novena is powerful." I looked at her and asked, "Is it effective?" The lady smiled and left.
The next fifty years, St. Martha has always been there to help me in my school work and much later, in our family's household responsibilities especially feeding the family as well as hosting family and friends to whatever holidays and holy days there were.
The novena consists of lighting a candle and saying the novena prayer for nine consecutive Tuesdays. All the times I've prayed this novena, my petitions would be answered on a Tuesday. The latest novena I prayed was about three weeks ago asking for a number of favors for my son's project. And one by one, my prayers were answered coincidentally on Tuesdays.
One time, I wrote a short narrative on her after realizing that I really didn't know much about her. I was so surprised that the day I wrote her story was on her feast day!
There were special times when I really felt her in my heart. A few years back, I was surprisingly called to talk to high school students after a mass on the occasion of the blessing of St. Martha's kitchen (which in itself was serendipity). I resisted but the presider insisted. With no choice but to go to the lectern, I spoke in my head, "What do I talk about?" Instantly, a reply in my mind came. Like telepathy. It said, "Talk about your journey with St. Martha." Everyone loved it.
I have been the recipient of several favors granted over several decades. My only regret now is not having written all the blessings that our Lord has given me through the intercession of St. Martha.
Moving forward, I will be more cognizant of documenting these graces. Being reminded of how our saints help us in our prayers to Jesus fills the heart with joy.
St. Martha, please pray for us.
